Cats are often viewed as aloof, lazy and less affectionate then their dog counterparts. A person not exposed to the affectionate style of a cat will frequently mistake the behavior of these intuitive creatures as being extremely independent and very strong willed. For years the favorite household pet has been the dog, but recent surveys indicate an increase in the number of households adopting cats. Could this conversion in animal companions be due to the changing lifestyle of our culture, or because of the healing powers these animals may possess? My guess is that its a little of both.
It has been said that in the days of Atlantis healers would use crystals to assist them in healing treatments. When a healer was called to visit an outlying village, they were unable to take along their crystals because the people of that time believed the stones were tools of the black arts. Needing an alternative method to help transmute the energy, healers would take along a cat as a surrogate tool. The cat, by it's very nature, presented no threat and the healer was then permitted to enter the person's home to perform the healing. As a result, cats have been used throughout the centuries as conduits in the
healing arts.
Animals have been assisting humans for centuries; each has been assigned a specific job to facilitate their human companions. In many ancient cultures it was vogue to have a lion or other large cat next to a ruling entity. Many believe cats have the ability to transmit cosmic radio waves and act as links to other etheric realms.
Felines have been empowered to remove accumulated negative energy from the human body. On a daily basis, mostly while sleeping, cats assist in releasing all negative energy, such as stress, that has accumulated during the day. When a cat sleeps, their bodies release those energies that have been acquired; that's one of the reasons why cats sleep so much. When you are over stressed, the cat will attempt to take-on "all" of your negative energy. This often results in an overweight kitty. Without enough hours in a day to expel the energy, cats store the excess energy as fat until they can find a way to release it. Now you know why there are so many overweight cats, it isn't the food they are eating, but the stress and negative energy being fed to them. Having more than one cat in a household can take some of the burden off of a single cat, but reducing "your" stress and negative energy will make for a much healthier and happier environment for both you and your cat(s).
Throughout history cats have helped Humankind, and many kitty lives have been lost in the process. During World War II, over 500,000 cats were used by the British army to alert soldiers before a gas attack would occur. Over and over again animal companions, not only cats, have stepped up to the plate to assist humans. It's time we start to acknowledge their contributions and call attention to the to treatment of all animals around the globe.
An old Cherokee is telling his grandson about a fight that is going on inside of himself between 2 wolves.
One is evil: Anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is good: Joy, peace, love hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his Grandfather, "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one I feed".
A man, his horse and his dog were walking up a steep mountain path. They were hot, sweaty and thirsty. Eventually they came upon a place that had a large marble archway entrance and a fountain beyond. They went in and spoke to the guard. "This is a beautiful place, what is it called?" The guard answered, "It is heaven."
The traveler said, "Well, I am very glad to see it because we 're very thirsty."
"You're welcome to come and drink all the water you want. And the guard indicated the fountain.
"My horse and dog are also thirsty."
"I'm terribly sorry, said the guard, but animals are not allowed in here."
The man was deeply disappointed for he really was very thirsty, but he was not prepared to drink alone, so he thanked the guard and went on his way. Exhausted after more trudging uphill, they reached an old gateway that opened onto a dirt road flanked by trees. A man, his hat pulled down over his face was stretched out in the shade of tone of the trees, apparently asleep.
"Good morning." Said the traveler.
The other man greeted him with a nod.
"We're very thirsty - my horse, my dog and me."
"There's a spring over there amongst those rocks, said the man, indicating the spot. You can drink all you want."
The man, his horse and his dog went to the spring and quenched their thirst. The traveler returned to thank the man.
"Come back whenever you want", he was told.
"By the way, what's this place called?"
"Heaven."
"Heaven? But the guard at the marble gateway told me that was Heaven!"
"That's not Heaven, that's Hell."
The traveler was puzzled.
"You shouldn't let others take your name in vain, you know! False information can lead to all kinds of confusion."
"On the contrary, they do us a great favor, because the ones who stay there are those who have proved themselves capable of abandoning their dearest friends."
Before the Atomic Age, chemistry professors used to say that a person's worth (from strictly chemical standpoint) was about $32.00 on the open market. In recent years, this view has undergone a startling change. Scientists now calculate that if the electronic energy in the hydrogen atoms of your body could be utilized, you could supply all the electrical needs of a large, highly industrialized country for nearly a week. A DuPont scientist said that the atoms of your body contain a potential energy of more than eleven million kilowatt hours per pound. The average person, by this estimate, is worth about $85 Billion dollars.
Moreover, the electrons in the atoms of your body are not just particles of matter; they are waves of living energy. And these waves ripple out and spread themselves in patterns of light, and as they move, they sing!
If you had the proper hearing aid, you could hear a great symphonic concert as these waves play and flow, merging with the waves of neighbouring atoms. And they not only sing; they shine. If you stand in front of an infrared television camera in a completely dark room, the screen will show you, from top to toe, as a glistening, radiating, gleaming form.
In short, you're a whole lot more than meets the casual eye.
Add to this the fact that to try to reproduce your mind mechanically would cost billions of dollars and you begin to see yourself for what you really are; AN AMAZING, INFINITELY VALUABLE CREATURE. And not only are you immensely valuable as a human being, you are unlike any other human who ever lived, or ever will live.
If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like this:
There would be:
- 57 Asians
- 21 Europeans
- 14 from the Western Hemisphere, North and South
- 8 Africans
- 48 would be male
- 70 would be non-white
- 30 would be Caucasian
- 70 would be non-Christian
- 30 would Christian
- 89 would be heterosexual
- 11 would be homosexual
- 6 people would possess 59% of the world’s wealth, and all 6 would be from the United States
- 80 would live in sub-standard housing
- 70 would be unable to read
- 50 would suffer from malnutrition
- 1 would be near death
- 1 would be near birth
- 1 would have a college education
- 1 would own a computer.
When one considers our world from this compressed perspective, the need for acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent.
Joe Smith started the day early having set his alarm clock ( MADE IN JAPAN) for 6am. While his coffeepot (MADE IN CHINA) was perking, he shaved with his electric razor ( MADE IN HONG KONG). He put on a dress shirt (MADE IN SRI LANKA), designer jeans ( MADE IN SINGAPORE) and tennis shoes (MADE IN KOREA). After cooking his breakfast in his new electric skillet (MADE IN INDIA) he sat down with his calculator (MADE IN MEXICO ) to see how much he could spend today. After setting his watch (MADE IN TAIWAN) to the radio MADE IN INDIA ) he got in his car (MADE IN GERMANY) and continued his search for a good paying CANADIAN JOB.
At the end of yet another discouraging and fruitless day, Joe decided to relax for a while. He put on his sandals (MADE IN BRAZIL) poured himself a glass of wine (MADE IN FRANCE) and turned on his TV (MADE IN INDONESIA), and then wondered why he can't find a good paying job in CANADA....
Friends are people we choose to have in our lives - they re the ones who stand by us in difficult times and rejoice in our triumphs. They do not draw on our energy, nor we on theirs, but somehow there is an even exchange.
In 1999, I opened Spirit Quest Books in Salmon Arm. Set up was interesting, I hadn't done anything quite like this before. I had definite ideas of what should be a part of the establishment and every facet of set up, from decorating to buying merchandise, was a learning experience. As a new resident to Salmon Arm, I had few resources in terms of friends that I could call upon. Both new acquaintances and family assisted with the set up and, of course, counselled me in areas where I sought advice.
The dream continues to be to offer a quiet refuge, different from other retail establishments. One that will offer alternative health treatments, aromatherapy oils, unique gifts and alternative health, self help books. Much of what is offered in the store reflects my own values which, one could say, are "new age".
Since opening the store, I have had the assistance of both customers and friends and been able to share my time and my dream with many different people from different walks of life.
In mid-February plans for decorating and arrangement of space in my new location began to take shape. There was painting to be done, carpets to be cleaned and equipment to be purchased. As a shopkeeper, I want people to "shop local" therefore I needed to do the same. Wherever possible, I employed local people and I purchased store equipment locally. Tradespeople who created the atmosphere included Brad Mainprize, Ed Shaw, Bill Coleman, Vic Phillips.
The weekend before spring break, the stage was set and the onerous task of transferring stock from the "old" to the new location began.
Others gave freely of their time from their busy lives to assist with the move -- including Susan MacFarland, Sharolee Coty, Pat Wilson, Bonnie Vandevosse, John Wayslow, Jarod Pietz, Darlene Folk, Jay Squires, and Barry Pietz.
Response from friends and customers was overwhelming. Many, many of my customers offered their assistance with the move. Most of all, I know that many of my customers not only wholeheartedly support my business idea but also have become friends.
At Spirit Quest Books we value our customers as friends. Stop by for a visit soon!
A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, "How heavy is this glass of water?" Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it.
"If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.
"In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."
"And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on. As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest. When we're refreshed, we can pick it up again. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, put them down for a moment. Relax; rest, before you pick them up again.
Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, and be best to yourself. Life is short; take time to enjoy it.
Briefly, according to classical literature the signs of an awakened kundalini can be grouped into: mental signs, vocal signs and physical signs. Mental signs can include visions that range from ecstatically blissful to terrifyingly frightful. Vocal signs can include spontaneous vocal expressions that range from singing or reciting mantras to make various animals sounds such as growling or chirping. Physical signs include trembling, shaking and spontaneously performing hatha yoga postures and pranayamas.
From a more subjective perspective the more pleasant experiences associated with a kundalini awakening may include: waves of bliss, periods of elation, glimpses of transcendental consciousness. The less pleasant experiences associated with a kundalini awakening may include:include: trembling, sharp aches in areas associated with the chakras, periods of irrational anxiety, sudden flashes of heat.
If we take the psychological perspective and view kundalini as the power latent in our unconscious then it is easy to understand that awakening this force is going to bring a greater amount of unconscious material into our consciousness. Even in the best of circumstances this is likely to be uncomfortable and if an individual is barely coping with his unconscious even under normal circumstances then awakening kundalini may push the individual over into psychosis. This phenomenon has been documented many times.
Forceful methods of awakening kundalini pose additional dangers. Because quite forceful methods can be used to awaken kundalini these techniques themselves are potentially physically and mentally disruptive. An individual named Gopi Krishna awakened his kundalini by doing unguided meditation on his crown cakra. His life after awakening was both blessed by ecstatic bliss and tormented by physical and mental discomfort. Eventually his experience stabilized. He wrote down his experiences in a recently re-released autobiography entitled ``Living with Kundalini.'' Gopi Krishna's autobiography appears to be an honest representation of his experiences but it is only one extreme datapoint in the panorama of experience on kundalini yoga. It represents dangers in forceful unguided practice but it is not representative of a typical practicioner's experience.
First of all it may be useful to observe that there is no technique currently known on earth that appears to be rapidly catapulting large number of individuals toward enlightenment. Because kundalini yogas deal so directly with a powerful enlightening force it seems natural that they would be "faster", but there appears to be a lot of tortoise and hare phenomena at work with newbie kundalini yogins. Many people begin kundalini yoga, have strong initial experiences and then become frightened. Many who perservere through this initial phase become distracted by the energy and focus on temporal and phenomenal applications of the energy.
This ain't coming from no prophet,
Just an ordinary man,
When I close my eyes I see,
The way this world shall be,
When we all walk hand-in-hand.
When the last child cries for a crust of bread,
When the last man dies for just words that he said,
When there's shelter over the poorest head,
We shall be free.
When the last thing we notice is the color of skin,
And the first thing we look for is the beauty within,
When the skies and the oceans are clean again,
Then we shall be free.
We shall be free,
We shall be free,
Stand straight and walk proud,
`Cause we shall be free.
When we're free to love anyone we choose,
When this world's big enough for all different views,
When we all can worship from our own kinds of pews,
Then we shall be free.
For all of my life I have been on a spiritual path. Consciously, it began when I was eleven years old and was taught how to read palms. I remember that even before learning about palmistry, when I would speak, I would hear my parents speaking in hushed voices about how I “knew” things.
In what seemed to be a natural progression from palmistry, as I gained life experience, I studied astrology, tealeaf reading, Tarot, I Ching, playing cards, and past lives. I became a healer and metaphysician.
Now past lives were always an interesting subject for me. While others asked are they real, how do you know? I knew. I could not explain how I knew, I just knew.
What does history say? Many religions support past lives. Buddhism, Judaism, and Celtic Christianity have references to past lives. In our early history, the Old and New Testaments of the Bible did have references to past lives and reincarnation. References to reincarnation were written out of the Bible during the Nicean Council meetings that began around 325 AD. The Nicean Council was comprised of the warrior priests, Roman Emperors, Western and Byzantine - in fact they were tyrants and who believed they owned their subjects body and soul, and needed a way to control the lives of their subjects.
There is an area of physics, called Quantum physics, which speaks of concurrencies of lifetimes. But is there any proof?
Dr. Ian Stevenson of the University of Virginia Medical School has researched 2600 cases of children’s past life recall. 900 of these cases have been verified. That’s one in three! Children reach the age of reason at age eight and until that age will often refer to previous lives. Many of the child subjects were from poor, underdeveloped countries where they would not have been influenced by education and outside influences such as television.
Children remember. Most adults in our society pooh pooh what children say and disregard it as an active imagination.
So, why now? If we look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs – at this time in our life and in our society, our primary needs of health, food, shelter, safety and love are generally met and because we are not in survival, we are able to devote time to such luxuries and “intangibles” as philosophy.
How/why could they help? Well, exploring past lives can explain situations that we do not understand in our current circumstances.
Let’s look at a couple of case histories – from an article by a Reiki Master. She was giving a Reiki treatment to a woman who could not conceive. As she placed her hands over the client’s ovaries, she sensed they were in good health and then she had a vision of a Native American woman with tears in her eyes handing her baby over to a white man. There were others present, forcing her to do this. As this scene was verbalized, the woman shouted, “I hate white men!” (The client was Caucasian in this lifetime.) This past life story allowed the woman to release her subconscious fear that her baby would have to be given up. She was now free to conceive.
For myself, from the time when I was about eight years old, I had always doodled the name “Sam”. I never knew a Sam or a Samantha from school and there were no “Sam’s” in my family. The only Sam I had ever known of was Sam Snead who was a well-known golf player at the time. I had a fascination with the Deep South of the USA.
So, when I had my first past life regression in my early 30’s, I had no idea what to expect and suddenly I was catapulted into the Deep South of the USA during the Civil War. I was a 14-year-old girl hiding in a closet in a plantation house when the soldiers found me. Then about 15 years later I was married, living in Arizona, a long way from town. I had a son, Marc and a husband (not the son’s father) whose name was Sam. Sam was missing his front teeth and I feared him – although I was grateful to him for taking me in. My lesson in that life was to learn patience. (I still haven’t perfected this one!)
Also, throughout my life I had an aversion to people (particularly men) who were missing their front teeth. Anyone whose smile revealed a gap where a front tooth should be was a person that I would cross a street to avoid and wanted no contact with. This was not conscious in my thoughts at the time until after the regression.
Now with all of that, what do YOU think?
Life constantly brings us challenges. Before we came to this life, we chose a path. Occasionally, life changes make it difficult to stay on this path. We realize that somehow life isn‚t right and we may try many cures before we regain our path. A relocation cure is a valid choice, but not always the best choice at that particular time.
The relocation cure is the one taken to avoid a lesson by simply moving away from a situation. For example - when there are no others with similar interests or goals, there are three choices (1) choose to operate in complete isolation, (2) actively seek out situations and individuals to provide the environment necessary for growth or (3) move to a different venue which (hopefully) provides the correct environment. As children we are told that when we do not agree with something about another person, it is because of something we see within ourselves but choose not to look at. The ego makes that a hard pill to swallow.
However, in my experience, it seems to be true. It is not the people in our lives that prevent opportunities of growth and staying on our spiritual path- it is within us. We need to allow the correct circumstances and energy to develop in our lives, in order to nurture the growth and understanding that is so necessary to keeping us on our individual path. In choosing to have the correct energy around us to facilitate growth, we need the correct environment. The correct environment is both a physical state and a philosophical or spiritual state. Growth requires challenge as well as energy and individuals in our lives with similar interests and goals as ours.
Moving to another location in order to stay on the path can be an avoidance, or it can be correct. When I moved from my home of 17 years in the Lower Mainland to a smaller community, my goal was to make my life easier and to return to my path. It was not the case. From the very start, the energy of the area and the individuals in the new location were erratic. I am either a slow learner, or I had other lessons to learn, but it took me six years to realize that the location I had chosen was not compatible with my predestined spiritual path.
So many times in life, I have said that I truly believe that we are here to learn our chosen lessons and when we are no longer learning, we leave this life. I received many signs that I was not on the correct path. I chose to ignore them all, thinking they were only coincidence. In March 1998, I was involved in a head-on collision (the other driver wanted to be in the same lane as my pickup, but he was going in the opposite direction!). I began to realize that I had known for some time that change was required and the "coincidence" of being on someone else‚s path travelling at 40 kph was a clear indication that it was time to check the map!
It was evident to me that I was not living in an environment that would allow me the challenge and growth I sought. For the second time in six years, foremost in my mind was the knowledge that I had to move. I began a quest to find the correct place for me. Previously, I had looked at several places in BC and Calgary. Somehow Calgary was not quite right. Then, on the way back to the Lower Mainland, I stopped to visit my brother and his family in Salmon Arm. This was the first time I had looked at the area as a potential residence. My decision was made after only one day! It felt right. The energy was good!
Having made a similar (and ultimately incorrect) decision six years previously, I was determined to thoroughly explore all of the reasons why a move to Salmon Arm would be correct. For the next two months, during the Salmon Arm wildfire and its aftermath, I continually questioned my decision. It seemed right. In October 1998, I made the move. I put my house on the market, thinking that if my decision was correct, then my house would sell quickly and I could start my business.
Six months passed, and then ten months. The house was still for sale. At the ten-month mark, I realized that my resolve to pursue my dream and make this my home was being tested. So many things seemed right, and yet the sign I was seeking did not materialize.
November 2nd, 1999 was the official opening of Spirit Quest Books, my long-time dream of creating a venue where people come to heal their spirit. Three days later my house was sold! I learned many things about others and myself during my six-year detour. I‚m now on a different path from some friends but have gained some new friends along the way. I believe I am back on my predestined spirit quest!
Balance - it's what we are all trying to achieve in this lifetime. As youngsters, it is invariably psychological balance - trying to understand others and their/our reactions to various situations. As we mature, some of us continue to strive for psychological balance. For some, it is physical balance as we age, we become less flexible and more like ourselves, thereby staying with our old and familiar patterns, even though they no longer suit us as we grow in experience. This can result in a lack of growth, making our spiritual path more difficult than it needs to be.
While on this earth our healing journey is made easier as we learn to understand and therefore heal ourselves. We all have triggers that cause us to react to the words, gestures, or deeds of others. Often these triggers are so subtle that we are unaware of the nuances of our reaction or interaction with others. Healing the spirit involves recognizing the triggers, actions and reactions that are an integral part of our interaction with others. As we begin to heal our spirit or soul, our personal quest seems to develop more facets and the healing/understanding develops a subtlety.
Healing that's what this life is all about. As I was putting together the bookshelves for Spirit Quest Books, the need for balance and light was exemplified for me. One of the tools at hand was an old wooden handled hammer, while another was a more "modern" and balanced steel hammer.
Stubbornly, I persisted in using the heirloom wooden handled hammer, despite its lack of balance compared to the "modern" steel hammer. Repeatedly, I hit my thumb instead of the desired target of small nails. After several hours of working with this tool, I realized that in my drive to complete the construction, I had overlooked my own need for balance. I was out of balance. This was being amplified by my choice of hammer!
There are many tools available to help us to recognize ourselves meditation, inspiration, psychology, divination, quantum physics are but a few. My own journey of self-discovery began with a neighbor, a somewhat eccentric woman, who taught me to read palms when I was eleven years old. Why she chose me to share her knowledge and resource books with is an unknown, but I am thankful that she did. Some forty years later, I continue to rely on this skill to help me to understand others. Palmistry was only the start of my personal journey that took a path including tealeaf reading, tarot, numerology, astrology, Wicca, meditation, Reiki, aromatherapy, and alternative healing. I am a lightworker.
The quest to heal the spirit is achieved in small measures when one is coming from the light and in balance. Self-help, inspirational and new age books and products are among the fastest growing businesses in North America. In November, 1999 Spirit Quest Books opened in Salmon Arm providing the North Okanagan with a venue for exploring some of the tools available to help us on our journeys. Drop by and share this experience it may assist you in your own spirit quest!
Words - By Maggy Davidson
So many meanings for words in the English language, yet we seldom look at other languages in enough depth to understand the complexities and innuendoes of those languages. We are too busy trying to understand our own.
In Ancient Greece, the word used for the language of the times was Koine. So, when a man gives his word, does the expression connect to the coin of the realm? I wonder.
The Greek word "agape" was used in original gospels in Koine or the language of the time. In English the dictionaries give the definition of agape as:
• Open mouthed with wonder or expectation.
• Greek word meaning love but distinct from erotic love or familial love. Important for Christians as it is that kind of unconditional love which they must show their neighbours. Joseph Fletcher‚s Situation ethics claim that moral decision making must centre around determining the most agape-loving thing to do in a situation: www.r.bowie.btinternet.co.uk
• Greek word meaning love, love feast, designating the meal of fellowship eaten at some gatherings of early Christians. Although held in some places in connection with the Mass, the agape was not part of the Mass, nor was it of universal insitution and observance. It was infrequently observed by the fifth century and disappeared altogether between the sixth and eight centuries: www.osv.com/catholicalmanac
• The purest manifestation of Love, it works through mankind and changes it fro the inside: http://home.online.no
• One of the three different Greek words for love. It is the one used to designate the love of God for us, our love for God, and our most profound love for one another. The word is also used to describe the common meal early Christians held in connection with the Eucharist: www.scu.edu
• A state of unconditional love for everything. This is considered the ultimate goal of all sentient evolution. Usually pronounced ah-guh-pay" www.sumerjoy.com
• Love that is spiritual, not sexual, in its nature: www.dissociation.com
What started this curiosity for me was a reference indicating that the Greek language has a plethora of words for love, even then probably not enough. Love of God, love of man, love of woman, love of life, love of parent, love of country. It was the Greek monks and scholars who originally translated and transcribed the works of the New Testament.
The Apostle Paul included agape in his famous triad, along with faith and hope: agape. Translators of the King James Bible famously and unfortunately rendered the word as charity.
Would our world today be different if the word agape been translated to love instead of charity?
A quick look at what's happening in your life.
So much information and so many books -- is there one that will tell what you need to know in a nutshell? To date, I have not found one. There are several good books out there, and I have not yet found the perfect one. For a quick look at what's happening in someone's life, I use a system taught to me many years ago, and it works like this:
First of all, take your birth date, and add it all together, e.g. if your birth date is November 27, 1972, you would add 11+27+1+9+7+2, which is 32, add 3+2 and 5 is the answer. Therefore your number based on your date of birth is 5. Add this to the current year, 2000 this year, and the number adds down to a 7. If this is your number then this is a year when you are seeking/exploring your spirituality or spiritual values.
In a 1 year, we begin a new project, in a 2 year, we establish the values that relate to the project, in a 3 year we communicate to others what we intend to do, and in a 4 year, we have enough information in place as far as the project, its values, and we've told enough people about it that we must now work hard to bring it to fruition. The 5-year is one where re-assessment is required. During the 5-year, we might change the formula, change the path slightly, or abandon that project and move onto a new one. The 6 year will be the first year of making a profit whatever that looks like. 7 is a year to pause, and we look at our non-material or spiritual values. If the project will produce rewards, then the 8-year is when these will be reaped (remember not everything has a dollar value on it, though!).
The 9-year is spent tidying up the loose ends and perhaps dreaming of what the next project might be. And we begin again at the 1-year with a new cycle.
This format usually works (it's been around for at least 5,000 years), nothing magical or mysterious, except that sometimes as humans we find it difficult to look at the big picture because we are so caught in the small nuances of everyday life.
Try it out and have some fun with it!
On a very warm, sunny day at 2 in the afternoon, toward the end of July, 2003 we received a visitor in our store. While eight or ten patrons who were leisurely browsing the shelves, a bat flew in through our open door to reconnoiter Spirit Quest Books. Yes, a bat!
First the bat checked out the music selection, then videos for sale, and in search of other areas of interest, it flew in a straight line to the rear of the store, some 100 feet away. The bat then circled the greeting cards – this action encouraged one customer to try squat thrust exercises whilst holding her head.
All of the staff left the store to watch through the windows from the street as proprietor Maggy Davidson sought out a bat size box and began stalking the bat. Five dashes from the front to the rear of the store and back again, a breathless Maggy was delighted when the bat landed in the display window on top of mosquito netting. (Guess (s)he knows where supper comes from! Finally a chance to capture this elusive creature!
The box was raised, the bat nudged and (s)he fell neatly into the box. The lid was sealed, and the bat quickly found its way out of a hole near the top of the box. He was off again! By this time, there were at least six customers with faces pressed to the window watching the bat chase. Time to repair the hole in the box!
The store, meantime, had become a customer-free zone. Our former customers were on the outside looking in! One customer helped by holding the second door wide open so our friend could fly through a span of six feet.
Once free again, the bat circumnavigated the store past the bat incense holders and apparently tried to find the spoon rests marked “Eye of Newt. Toe of Frog, Wool of Bat and Hair of Dog.” Alas, we are temporarily sold out!
At this point, a man entered the store complete with plastic shopping bag and said, “I hear you’ve a bat in the store!.” Small towns, you know, everyone knows everything. “I’m here to help you catch it.” “With a plastic bag?” “You bet!” “How did you know we had a bat in the store?” quizzed I. “Oh, I was just in the Liquor Store across the street and it was there, it’s the same one, so I thought I’d help.”
So now there were two of us on the trail of this elusive bat. Above the greeting cards in the back, (s)he settled in near the ceiling. The box was raised, bat nudged , box closed, plastic bag opened, box inserted, and the helpful customer walked swiftly out of the store.
Once on the street, the plastic bag was opened, box flaps freed, and the bat joyously flew out – last seen heading westward on Lakeshore Drive. Spirit Quest Books is once again a bat-free zone!
